What is the LANAP® protocol?
The LANAP protocol is a minimally invasive laser treatment for periodontal disease. It is the world's first and only laser protocol that is FDA cleared and scientifically proven to regenerate bone and tissues lost to gum disease.
The LANAP protocol is typically performed in a dentist’s office under local anesthesia. This innovative approach targets and removes only the diseased tissue and harmful bacteria in the gum pockets, leaving healthy gum tissue and bone intact.
Benefits of the LANAP® Protocol
- Less post-operative pain — The LANAP protocol uses the PerioLase MVP-7 and helps avoid cutting and stitching of the gums. As a result, patients usually have minimal post-operative discomfort.
- Quicker recovery time — Most patients are able to return to their regular daily activities immediately following the procedure, which generally requires less than a 24-hour recovery period.
- No cutting or stitches: Because no incisions are made, there is no need for sutures, which promotes a more comfortable healing process.
- True Regeneration: LANAP is the only laser-based procedure scientifically proven to achieve true periodontal regeneration, including the regrowth of new cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone on a previously diseased root surface.
- Preserves Tissue: The selective nature of the laser means more healthy gum tissue is preserved, leading to minimal gum recession.
- Fewer sessions — The LANAP protocol requires only one to two sessions with the dentist, each lasting two to three hours, with two follow-up visits.
Who is a candidate for LANAP® laser surgery?
Patients with moderate-to-severe gum disease can especially benefit from the LANAP protocol. The LANAP protocol is also an excellent treatment option for patients who are fearful of conventional scalpel surgery.
